Every year, the MTV Video Music Awards is a much-awaited event not just in the US but also in different parts of the world. Aside from the extravagant performances by prominent artists, the expected announcement of the nominees and winners can be watched over the awards night every year.

On the 12th day of September, Sunday, the MTV Video Music Awards 2021 was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York City. Who won artist of the year 2021 MTV VMA?

There are a lot of reasons why audiences looked for a way to be a part of the MTV Video Music Awards 2021. Check on and see what you have missed this year that you will not see again next year. 

  • It is the first time that Barclays Center is hosting the show since the 2013 ceremony.
  • Doja Cat, the famous American rapper and singer, hosted the event.
  • We’re done with the no in-person ceremony due to Covid-19 last year. This year is back to a much exciting event because the audiences can see their favorite artists performing and accepting the awards live again. 
  • BTS, along with Olivia Rodrigo, and Lil Nas X received the most numbers awards in the event. These all-time favorite artists got three awards each. Where Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish were on the next spot receiving two awards. 
  • Beyoncé, a celebrity mom of three, collected her 29th trophy from the event. 
  • Justin Biever was the most nominated artist of the event. Receiving nine nominations for different awards. 
  • Blue Ivy Carter, the award-winning daughter of Beyonce and Jay-Z, is the youngest winner in the said event’s history.
  • The year’s most anticipated event was lighted up with the performances of Polo G’s “Rapstar”, Chloe’s “Have Mercy” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers”. 
  • And the most renowned artists of all time also stole the stage for their own special appearances in the event. Where Madonna opened the show and Jennifer Lopez presented the Song of the Year.
  • Cyndi Lauper presented the nominees for Best Pop and Avril Lavigne presented the Video for Good.

The Music Video Awards night has always been memorable to every artist. To be nominated for any of the awards is already an overwhelming experience. But to be awarded as the winner is exhilarating. 

The Video of the Year award goes to Lil Nas X for “Montero” (Call Me by Your Name). Where Cardi B’s “WAP” (featuring Megan Thee Stallion), DJ Khaled’s “Popstar” (featuring Drake and starring Justin Bieber), Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” (featuring SZA), Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits”, and The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” was also nominated. 

Olivia Rodrigo won the Song of the Year award with her “Drivers License” video. 24kGoldn’s “Mood” (featuring Iann Dior), Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak and Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open”, BTS’s “Dynamite”, Cardi B’s “WAP” (featuring Megan Thee Stallion), and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” were also nominees.

Justin Bieber, who has already proved himself in the industry since 2008, was nominated and awarded as the Artist of the Year in the event. Along with Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift as nominees. 

Olivia Rodrigo was awarded as the Best New Artist over the other five nominees. They are 24kGoldn, Giveon, The Kid Laroi, Polo G, and Saweetie.

Receiving her third award that night, Olivia Rodrigo, won the Push Performance of The Year for her “Drivers License” music video. There were 12 nominees that night for the said category.

The “Kiss Me More” (featuring SZA) of Doja Cat has won the Best Collaboration category. 

The other nominees were 24kGoldn (featuring Iann Dior) “Mood”, Cardi B (featuring Megan Thee Stallion) “WAP”, Drake (featuring Lil Durk) “Laugh Now Cry Later”, Justin Bieber (featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon) “Peaches”, and Miley Cyrus (featuring Dua Lipa) “Prisoner”

Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” (featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon) has won the Best Pop category among the other seven nominees. It was BTS who was awarded for the category in 2020.

Cardi B (featuring Megan Thee Stallion) “WAP”, Drake (featuring Lil Durk) “Laugh Now Cry Later”, Lil Baby (featuring Megan Thee Stallion) “On Me (Remix)”, Moneybagg Yo, “Said Sum”, Polo G “Rapstar” were also nominated for the Best Hip Hop category where Travis Scott for (featuring Young Thug and M.I.A.) “Franchise” was the awardee. 

The award for Best R&B was given to Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak, and Silk Sonic for their “Leave the Door Open” music video. The music videos “Brown Skin Girl”, “Go Crazy”, “Heartbreak Anniversary”, “Come Through”, and “Good Days” were also nominated.

Meanwhile, the BTS remained to be the Best K-Pop for their song “Butter”. They were awarded the same category last year for their “On” music video. 

Billie Eilish and Rosalía won the Best Latin award for their “Lo Vas a Olvidar” music video. “Dakiti”, “Girl like Me”, “Un Dia (One Day)”, “Bichota”, and “Hawái” were nominated too.

John Mayer’s “Last Train Home” has won the Best Rock award this year. The other nominees were Evanescence’s “Use My Voice”, Foo Fighters’ “Shame Shame”, The Killers’ “My Own Soul’s Warning”, Kings of Leon’s “The Bandit”, and Lenny Kravitz’s “Raise Vibration”.

It was Machine Gun Kelly’s “Bloody Valentine” that won the Best Alternative last year. And it’s Machine Gun Kelly again this year for the “My Ex’s Best Friend” (featuring Blackbear) music video. 

The Video for Good 2021 award goes to “Your Power” by Billie Eilish. “Dancing with the Devil”, “Fight for You”, “Worldwide Beautiful”, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”, and “Entrepreneur” were also nominated.

Receiving their second award that night, BTS has won the Group of the Year category. Blackpink, CNCO, Foo Fighters, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5, Silk Sonic, and Twenty One Pilots were nominated.

BTS has brought home a total of three awards that night. Their music video “Butter” has won the Song of Summer award where 16 songs were nominated.

And Foo Fighters has won the MTV Global Icon Award for this year.
